What is wire gauge and why does it matter for extension cords?

If you've ever shopped for an extension cord and wondered what that gauge number on the package actually means, you're not alone. Wire gauge is one of those things that sounds technical but makes complete sense once someone explains it. And if you pick the wrong one, you could blow a breaker or, worse, start a fire. So let's break it down.

Wire gauge is a measurement of how thick the copper wire inside a cord is. In the United States, we use the American Wire Gauge system, or AWG. Here's the part that trips people up: lower numbers mean thicker wire. A 12 gauge cord has thicker wire than a 16 gauge cord, not thinner. Thicker wire can carry more electrical current without overheating.

Lower Gauge Numbers Mean Thicker Wire

Wire Gauge from Highest to Lowest Gauge
Wire Gauge from Highest to Lowest Gauge

16 gauge - Light-duty: lamps, phone chargers, fans, small appliances. ***Short cords only, because resistance builds up over distance.

14 gauge - Medium-duty: Most household appliances and power tools under 10 amps. It's a solid all-around choice for 25 to 50 foot runs.

12 gauge - Heavy-duty: Air compressors, table saws, refrigerators, anything that draws real current. If you're running a cord 50 to 100 feet, go 12 gauge.

10 gauge - Industrial: High-draw equipment and professional job sites.

The Longer the Cord, the Heavier Gauge you Need

A good rule of thumb: the longer the cord, the heavier the gauge you need. Resistance adds up over distance, which means your tool or appliance sees less voltage at the end of a long, thin cord.

Using an undersized cord doesn't just trip a breaker, it can damage your tools and, in a worst case, create a fire hazard. The cord heats up when it's carrying more current than it's rated for and that heat has to go somewhere.
